Here's a summary of responsibilities:

Under the direction and supervision of the Vice President, Sports Medicine (VP), the Lead Sports Dietitian is responsible for the development, oversight, and delivery of comprehensive sports nutrition services and programming for Team USA. This role collaborates closely with Sport Performance and NGB teams to ensure coordinated, high-quality nutrition support for athletes utilizing the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Centers (OPTCs). The Lead Sports Dietitian provides leadership and direction to the USOPC Sports Dietitians, including Fellows, fostering team alignment and professional growth. Additionally, the Lead supports the VP in the design and implementation of clinical pathways for nutrition assessment, referral, treatment, and intervention, and serves as a case manager for nutrition-related referrals.

The Lead Sports Dietitian demonstrates expertise in both clinical and performance-focused sports nutrition and maintains all relevant certifications and licensures required for practice. This role requires substantial experience supporting elite and diverse athlete populations, along with a proven ability to lead and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and across departments. The Lead is responsible for delivering evidence-based nutrition education and guidance to Team USA athletes, in alignment with the USOPC Sports Medicine vision, purpose, and the strategic goals of the sports nutrition program.

Here’s how you’ll have an impact:

  1. Partner with the VP to oversee the sports nutrition program and Sports Dietitian team and to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to identify and deliver the appropriate services for Team USA athletes.

  2. Lead, mentor, and contribute to building and nurturing the culture of the Sports Dietitians, including Fellows, within Sports Medicine at Training Centers and remotely. Contribute to an atmosphere of teamwork through clear expectations, frequent communication, and providing fair and consistent feedback. Manage performance of team members effectively.

  3. Establish and manage a high-quality network of contracted dietitian professionals across the U.S. Ensure all contractors meet USOPC standards for delivery, ethics, and alignment with Team USA’s vision. Assist the NGBs with identifying contracted providers for embedded services and lead any associated training of NGB providers.  

  4. Oversee the development and execution of the Sports Dietitian Fellowship program, including didactics, mentorship, and service provision plans.

  5. Collaborate with the VP to develop sports nutrition strategic plans and implement athlete sports nutrition service policies and procedures for daily operations and Games environments. Direct service coverage for athletes at Olympic & Paralympic Training Centers and supported delegation events. 

  6. Serve as a global expert to improve sports nutrition service provision and product engagement across Team USA and its stakeholders, including IOC/IPC, media, donors, and partners.

  7. Contribute to the development of an environment for USOPC team members and Olympic and Paralympic athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse.

  8. Support Team USA athletes in areas such as daily nutrition for performance and health, recovery nutrition strategies, weight and body composition issues, nutrition disorders/disordered eating, and supplement safety and usage. Collaborate with medical providers to order and review labs and implement appropriate interventions based on findings.

  9. Design and supervise recovery nutrition strategies, including Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), following professionally accepted Standards of Care for assigned athletes.

  10. Serve as a Sports Dietitian primary point of contact (PPC) with assigned NGBs.

  11. Remain current on the latest leading research globally in sport dietetics. Translate the latest scientific evidence into practical sport nutrition recommendations.

  12. Collaborate with the Sports Medicine Data Scientists and Sports Medicine Research team to identify trends, develop research questions, and implement strategies regarding the nutritional health and performance of Team USA athletes that align with our research priorities.  

  13. Design, track, and document measurable outcomes of nutrition services. Analyze and interpret collected data to enhance athletic performance and health.

  14. Evaluate athlete energy expenditure and balance and provide weight management protocols, when appropriate, with athletes to achieve performance and health goals.

  15. Measure and assess body composition using commonly accepted diagnostic tools (e.g., skin fold calipers, DXA, and/or other diagnostic tools for testing and evaluation).

  16. Engage in targeted follow-up with athletes flagged through EAHPPs or testing results, offering evidence-based nutrition recommendations for optimized health and performance.

  17. Evaluate food and herbal supplements for legality, safety, and efficacy, and make recommendations to identified athletes to achieve performance and health objectives.

  18. Lead individual, small group, and team nutrition education in formal and informal settings.

  19. Oversee the development and delivery of nutrition education programs for coaches, athletes, and applicable staff, including food service personnel. Represent the USOPC at professional conferences and events. As appropriate, deliver applied nutrition-focused presentations at coaching and/or professional conferences.

  20. Manage the scheduling of Sports Dietitian coverage and backfill of the Sports Dietitian Food & Nutrition as needed, namely with service provision and collaboration with the Food Services team in the dining hall.

  21. Adhere to HIPAA-compliant documentation and recordkeeping, including recording and entering all athlete encounters and related data in the electronic medical records in a complete and timely manner.

  22. Maintain compliance with IOC/IPC, WADA, USADA, and the Olympic and Paralympic Codes.

  23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Here are the skills and experience you'll need to be effective:

  • Where applicable, state regulation in the field of expertise must be obtained and continuously maintained throughout employment. No infractions or any form of disciplinary sanctions are acceptable prior to or during employment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sport Nutrition or Dietetics

  • Master’s degree in Sport Nutrition preferred

  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or foreign equivalent 

  • Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or equivalent preferred

  • Registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association or foreign equivalent 

  • Current Health Care Provider CPR

  • International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) certification preferred

  • Complete SafeSport, Anti-Doping, and Blood-borne Pathogen training within 30 days of employment

  • 10+ years of experience providing sports nutrition counseling services to an elite and diverse athlete population at the international, national, professional, and collegiate level

  • Experience working with tools and techniques standard in the field of sports nutrition (e.g., calipers, DXA, etc.)

  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary performance teams, including sport science and medical personnel

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a project team or staff

  • Electronic Medical Record experience preferred

  • Collaborative and people-centered leadership style that empowers others while delivering measurable results

  • Must possess a deep understanding of Performance Nutrition

  • Knowledge of and adherence to professional, legal, ethical, and regulatory standards endorsed by the licensing professional organization

  • Ability to conceptualize, diagnose problems, and implement appropriate treatment solutions

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and nutritional analysis programs

  • Strong interpersonal skills, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including, but not limited to, athletes (both Olympic and Paralympic), coaches, administrative staff, physicians, volunteers, and other medical personnel

  • Continuously comply with local, state, and federal health and safety standards, rules, and regulations

  • Ability to handle confidential information and communicate only to its intended audience(s)

  • Ability to deal with non-routine matters and special projects with minimum and/or specific instructions

Here's some more information you need to know:

  • Hiring pay range $112,550 - $142,939 per year

  • This Full-Time, Exempt position is intended to work 40 hours per week.

  • Bonus: This position will be eligible for the Annual Incentive Award Program, which has a 20% target. The USOPC may change or eliminate this program at any time at its sole discretion.
