DD Summit 2025 Session: Tackling Food Insecurity Through a Small Scale, Localized Lens
In 2023, an estimated 47.4 million Americans, or one in 7 households (13.5 percent) experienced food insecurity, or lack of access to an affordable, nutritious diet, disproportionately affecting BIPOC communities. Federal Nutrition Programs such as SNAP, WIC and National School Lunch Program attempt to address food insecurity for vulnerable populations and hunger organizations such as Food Banks and pantries, attempt to address hunger more broadly. Yet, despite broad efforts, there continues to be increased demand for food assistance. Some CBOs and small-scale farmers are working together against food insecurity through small, localized initiatives. Learn how RDs are tackling food insecurity in their communities through collaboration, mutual aid and creative partnerships, bringing culturally-relevant foods from farms directly to communities. Through these case studies and examples, attendees can better identify potential partnerships in their community to more sustainably address food insecurity and support equitable access to healthy foods.
