DD Summit 2025 Session: Representation Matters: Advocating for Culturally Relevant School Meals for Students of Color
In this session, participants will delve into the importance of culturally relevant school meals and the impact they can have on students of color. This presentation will explore how culturally inclusive meals foster a sense of belonging, improve engagement, and support the overall well-being of students from diverse backgrounds. Participants will learn about the challenges and limitations that exist in many school meal programs, from underrepresentation of dietitians of color to menus that lack cultural relevance.
We will discuss how dietitians can advocate effectively for meal options that better reflect and resonate with the cultural backgrounds of students, going beyond the often misleading visuals of school meals seen online. Attendees will also gain insights into practical strategies to influence change within school systems, helping bridge the gap between students' dietary needs and the cultural authenticity of their meals.
This session will demonstrate the positive outcomes of culturally tailored meals in promoting trust, boosting participation, and supporting academic success. By the end of this session, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and language needed to advocate for more inclusive school meals.
CEUs are only provided on the full DD Summit recording package. Learn more here.
